About Me :)
Maia Helvy is an Atlanta-based filmmaker, mixed media artist, and creative director whose work centers on the vibrant narratives of Black Queer women and Non-Binary individuals. With a foundation in film photography, Super 8, 35mm, and Mini DV video formats, Maia’s storytelling combines a textured, nostalgic aesthetic with a commitment to authenticity. Through film, Maia captures the intimate realities of their subjects, drawing from personal connections within Atlanta’s underground music and art scenes.
Driven by a collaborative approach, Maia prioritizes connection, creating a space where their subjects feel open and represented in ways that defy mainstream media’s limitations. Maia’s work seeks to amplify voices like theirs, offering a reparative narrative that challenges traditional storytelling conventions. Maia aspires to reshape how the stories of their communities are told—infusing each piece with warmth, nostalgia, and a commitment to reimagining representation in film.
